What is Hantavirus? Symptoms, Transmission Routes, and Preventive Measures

Hantavirus is a family of zoonotic viruses transmitted to humans by rodents, with certain strains exhibiting a potentially fatal clinical course. It is most commonly transmitted to humans through the inhalation of aerosolized particles originating from the urine, feces, or saliva of infected mice and rats. Depending on the specific strain, Hantavirus can precipitate two distinct clinical syndromes: Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), which primarily affects the lungs, and Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS), which targets the kidneys. The cases observed in Turkey predominantly present as the HFRS form.
