Bionic Ear

A cochlear implant (Bionic Ear) is a surgically implanted electronic device for individuals with severe to profound hearing loss who do not benefit from conventional hearing aids.

What is Bionic Ear?

A cochlear implant is a surgically placed device designed to provide hearing sensation to individuals with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss who receive limited benefit from hearing aids. While hearing aids merely amplify sound, cochlear implants bypass damaged portions of the inner ear to directly stimulate the auditory nerve.

The system consists of two main components: The External Component (Sound Processor) worn behind the ear converts sounds into digital signals. The Internal Component (Implant) surgically placed under the skin converts signals into electrical currents that stimulate the auditory nerve.

Common Symptoms

Severe Hearing Loss
Sensorineural hearing loss at a level where conventional hearing aids provide insufficient benefit.
Speech and Language Development Delay
Delayed language development in children due to lack of early sound exposure.
Communication Difficulty
Communication challenges in adults who lose all or most of their hearing later in life.

Diagnosis Methods

Audiological Assessment
Comprehensive hearing tests to determine the degree and type of hearing loss.
Specialist Consultation
Consultation with medical specialists including an experienced cochlear implant surgeon.

Treatments

Surgical Implantation
Surgical placement of the cochlear implant into the inner ear. The procedure is almost always safe. As of 2020, it can be applied starting from 9 months of age.
Speech and Language Therapy
Learning to interpret sounds post-implantation requires time and training. Speech-language therapists and audiologists are involved in this process.
